December 3rd ~ Nougat Nut

Friday is my personal favorite day of the week… Finding a nougat-praline in my calendar on a Friday seems more like a Friday 13th… Actually, I do not believe in things like this, but I had a really awkward chain of events on a Friday 13th, so, who knows?

As I told you, today I’m dealing with a nougat praline… And what’s the chocolate filling I dislike most except for liquorice? Yeah, you’re right, nougat. I hate this sickening nutty-sweetness in a sweet whole milk chocolate…. Then again, let’s try it before judging…

The rather thick chocolate shell is very light and smells milky, and of course you can smell the nougat on the outer parts as well. On the inside there is this familiar nutty smell, but the smooth mass does not have too much nut in it.

It is not only the smell, but also the taste that differs from the common nougat treat. It is just as sweet as usual, but it definitely lacks nut. This thing here is just sweet! Sugar and lots of sugar combined in a crème that makes your teeth hurt.

Well, I actually do not miss this intensive nut aroma I’ve expected to be there, but it just misses in this treat. Nougat is called like that because of its nutty aroma, not due to it’s amount of sugar (which is there anyway…).

All in all, I just cannot rate this thing really high. This has nothing to do with me disliking nougat, this chocolate simply is a sugar-treat… Bummer!

Reese’s FastBreak

Personally, I don’t really like the looks of this bar on the wrapper. It seems rather as if there was a lot of nougat compared to the peanut butter inside, instead of being square. But reality is totally different: The almost pyramid-like bar has an about four mm high bottom layer of nougat, topped with a thumbnail thick stripe of peanut butter. There is a small layer of a darker nougat version, which almost looks like the milk chocolate color-wise.

The coating gets greasy as soon as the cold of the fridge wears off; even though it isn’t anywhere near hot today. But I like it melting inside my mouth, releasing a sweet but milky chocolate taste. The peanut butter is salty as always and provides a nice amount of peanuty-taste. As usual, it dominates the taste of the entire bar; and it is really delicioud! But other than the intensive peanut butter, the light nougat on the bottom does not have a strong own flavor, especially no nutty flavor. And also the darker version that is surrounding the peanut butter on the sides and the top is not really nutty, but rather milky. Still, that’s something I don’t really mind as the nutty taste coming from the peanut butter is strong enough.

Four different kinds of texture combined in one bar; simply amazing! What do we have? Smooth and easy melting milk chocolate as a coating. Then there is the soft peanut butter and too different types of nougat: The texture of the nougat is more solid than the peanut butter, really chewy; and the dark version makes the chewiest part of the bar. Really awesome, I love it!

My final note is simply: wow (and this is not what I usually say about chocolate bars!)! I’d recommend this bar to everyone who likes peanut butter as much as I do. I really enjoyed the bar and I think this is one of the better Reese’s products. I want one…now 😦

Snickers Dark

As I am a huge fan of Snickers, I was really keen on this bar. I really like trying it in combination with my favorite type of chocolate: Dark chocolate.

The taste of the bar is fabulous: The bitter chocolate goes perfectly with the sweet nougat-caramel-nut filling. I don’t miss the sickly milk chocolate coating from the original snickers, to be honest, I’d take this bar over the original. It has a mild, not too bitter taste and does a great job in preventing the bar from turning sickly!

The nougat filling is rather crumbly, but still chewy. I find it a little too sweet, but in combination with the rest it is tasty. It comes with some minced peanuts that add a slight crunch and a richer taste to the nougat. Well done. The caramel is rather solid than liquid and it contains the larger pieces of peanuts. Basically, I sense the typical sweet toffee flavor in it, plus the really rich taste of the nuts in there.

So, all in all you get a really well done bar flavor-wise as well as texture-wise. I really enjoyed eating this bar covered in semi-sweet chocolate. All those popular bars should have a dark version omnipresent on the market, and please in Germany as well (yeah, dream on, most people tend to prefer milk chocolate, I suppose….) . I think those dark chocolate bars have a very balanced amount of sweetness and bitterness, it is something everyone should give a try!

Ritter Sport Winter-creation: nut in nougat-crème

Tomorrow this will be available for sale: The Ritter Sport winter collection! Basically, the winter creations are really nice. I’ve tried all of them as a miniature version, and of course I have my favorite, but I won’t tell you beforehands! Maybe you can guess! The three different flavors are: orange-marzipan, vanillekipferl and nut in nougat-crème.

The reason I start out with this one is that the bar is a little damaged from the transportation from Waldenbuch to my hometown, and I do not want it to get more and more smashed.

The bar looks like every other milk chocolate Ritter Sport bar: light brown with a deep shiny glimmer. It’s scent remembers me of nutella, the nougat-crème-aroma is extremely powerful and strong, while I cannot really sense the actual milk chocolate.

The filling is a lot lighter than the brown coating, dotted with an occasional piece of hazelnut. Despite the very intensive nougat smell, the flavor turns out to be not as sickly and rich of nuts as I thought. Of course, there is a lot of nut, especially hazelnut, but the nougat flavor is not that overwhelming and it does not fill your entire mouth with nut or eliminates the actual taste of chocolate. There still is this milky-cocoa thing coming from the shell, and the real nuts that add a nice overall aroma.

Texture-wise it is alright but nothing too spectacular. Soft meets smooth and the occasional bite from a small piece of nut – a nice mixture if you like the creamy type of chocolate.

Duplo Dark

The last time I ate an original Duplo I was a little disappointed by the little satisfaction I got from eating this. Being only 18.2g, this is a very small treat, and yet I expect a chocolate treat to satisfy me, whatever its size is!

The bitter chocolate coating does not remind me anyhow of the original version which has a really sweet milk chocolate coating. I am a little surprised by the bitterness, but this could make a great mix with the sweet nougat crème inside the bar.
The chocolate is not as bitter as I expected it to be, but it is also not sweet, rather mild. It does not melt too easily, but as there are layers of wafers beyond the coating, you have to chew it anyway. I like the chocolate, even though it is not the highest quality and richest. The mix with the wafers and the nougat crème is just awesome. It does not get as sweet as the original version, and therefore is really delicious!

And, do you know what the best part was? I was (at least a little) satisfied after I was done with that treat! This is something small I’d go for again; as it is nice for a small break.

Ritter Sport Nougat

A short review on the Ritter’s nougat version….Ritter Sport is one of my favorite low-budget chocolate branches. They just produce delicious flavors and every now and then they release awesome new products.
However, the nougat version is one of the really old ones and for me and some other people the odd one out. ..

You can see that the chocolate coating is only a little darker than the nougat inside. The texture of the nougat is rather mellow, but not too soft, just like a nougat crème for breakfast. In general, the chocolate is smooth and creamy and mixes perfectly with the nougat-crème. At first you only taste the melting milk chocolate, but rather sooner than later sweet nougat-flavor fills your mouth. What I miss is some more nut in the nougat. It is nutty, but the sweetness is just overshadowing the taste of nut. It gets sickly easily and the unique nougat taste just disappears soon.

The texture is boring and simply smooth, nothing spectacular happens while you’re eating this treat. There are a lot of better nougat products out there – nuttier ones and more unique ones, as well as versions with a memorable texture or plainly with something special about them. You can eat it and some sweet-chocolate lovers will probably like it a lot – otherwise this version would not be one of their oldest – but it cannot compete with any high quality nougat chocolate bar – sorry Ritter!

Ferrero Duplo

I cannot remember how many advertisements I saw on the tv of this chocolate bar, I know they were really annoying me when I was younger. Today, I don’t really watch a lot of tv, so I do not get to see them. But, surprise, surprise, this evening I watched tv for once and guess what – of course I was forced to watch the most recent version of this crappy advertisment.
Ferrero always claims that Duplo is a special chocolate, more specific, “probably the longest chocolate on earth”. So, let’s see whether the longest chocolate on earth is really that special.

The chocolate layer is crunchy, but the chocolate melts easily though. The chocolate and the nougat make the main ingredients of the chocolate, while the wafer adds a nice crunch and chewiness to it. The overall taste of the “bar” is rather milk chocolaty, but the hazelnut flavor of the nougat is clearly noticeable as well. It is really sweet, and personally I find it a little too sickly. It is gone in a moment and because of its plain sweetness, you won’t realise that you’ve just eaten almost 20g of chocolate.
The milk chocolate, hazelnut, nougat, wafer combination is nothing too outstanding, it might has been when the product was first introduced to the market decades ago. Today, there are a lot of chocolate bars that easily outrun Duplo. It is a nice snack when you’re on the run, but still I miss something more chocolaty.

I also have the dark version here and I guess I will try it soon to compare both versions. I strongly believe the bitter one is better, as dark chocolate contains more cocoa and therefore it will be a little richer tastewise.
It is not bad and in addition, this is a cult bar in Germany – so give it a go and try it yourself. If you’re totally on sweet chocolates, you might like it!
